Joe Seiler
(Lives and Works in London)

He was born to Brazilian parents in New York. At age 3 his family moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he spent his childhood and early adult years. The artist moved to California at age 18 where he would eventually earn a degree in Fine Arts from the University of San Diego, after studying economics, environmental studies, and architecture.

He began his practice between printmaking and sculpture, exploring the physicality of the process. Seiler began exploring the basic forms of scribbles through woodcuts, drawings, sculpture, and collage.

While drawing allowed him to see how these scribbles moved in and out of space, creating works out of rebar allowed the scribbles to take a three-dimensional presence. The process of printmaking is then not an end in and of itself, but part of a larger creative process.

Pushing and exaggerating the gesture of the scribble with ballpoint Bic pens, he has been working somewhere in between drawing and painting with the complete saturation of ink on paper.

Currently living in London, the artist has been pursuing his MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Joe Seiler has participated in solo and collective exhibits in Rio de Janeiro, San Diego and London since 2012.
