Anna Bella Geiger, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1933, studies in the 1950s, Anglo-Germanic Literature at UFRJ (Rio de Janeiro), History of Art with Hannah Levy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) and at New York University (NYU), both in New York, United States. Still in New York, teaches at Columbia University in the following decade. In the 1980s, she receives a scholarship from John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in NY and publishes with Fernando Cocchiarale the book Abstracionismo Geométrico e Informal: a vanguarda brasileira nos anos cinquenta.
Several individual and collective exhibitions accompany the development of her work, both nationally and internationally. Among them, we can highlight her participation in the Bienal de São Paulo in 1988, in the III Liverpool Biennial, in the Brazilian Contemporary Art Exhibition at the Beijing Museum of Modern Art, and several exhibitions at Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris) and MoMA (NY), including individual exhibitions. She currently teaches at the Parque Lage’s School of Visual Arts.
